My first sign of body rust!

Kinja'd!!!

I went out for lunch today and noticed three dime sized rust colored blobs on my rear splitgate. I rinsed them off with a little spit polish and discovered that the rust color was from rust. They are tiny little spots that I think I can deal with but still. Road salt can die the death thank you very much.

Its bad for the water, its bad for the air, its bad for the roads, its bad for the cars...its just shit.

No rust for 17 years of its life...2 years later and there is underneath and surface rust forming. Thanks alot Utah.

Is this not the natural state of Toyota SUVs?

Glad Oregon doesn't use salt, just sand and gravel.

No worries, that will buff out.

No seriously, get some scratch-x and a mf cloth, give it a couple seconds of perpendicular wipes, put on some wax to topcoat.. forget it..

btw, this is Toyota rust;

I’ve got some mild cutting and buffing compound with a powered orbital tool and some touchup paint and clearcoat to repair a little issue on a repainted part of a fender (so actually there is already some body rust but its not visible). What I should probably do when its warm is buff the whole thing out and then apply a little clearcoat to the spots and bake it on with a heat gun.

I flat out refuse to take my car out if there is salt on the roads. I have a sacrificial Honda for that.

Try some fall out remover like Iron X. You should try to do a full decontamination this spring with either Clay or a claying mitt like nanoskin and follow up with iron x.

Our car and truck get detailed each spring; clay, pc, three or four passes of different Meguirs products, then a sealant/techwax..

That pic above was just like my box on the ‘86. I took the grinder and cut off the bottom half and then eventually bought a second box, did up the bodywork on it, painted it and swapped it over.

Clearcoat is a pain..

That’s why I like that crushed sand volcanic rock they use in California. When we go to the local mountains to ski, if its snowing, they throw down what I think is crushed lava rock. It won’t damage your car, and helps give traction and melt the snow.

Well, it’s ruined. Looks like you need to start looking for a new truck. Sorry about that.

yeah, that’s what Idaho starting doing instead of salt because of the damning report on using salt. Trouble is its a pretty plentiful and cheap commodity in Salt Lake City.

Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure it won't spread.

You call that rust? You could hear chunks of rusted metal shift every time I opened the back of my tercel. Sound like that fucking rainmaker Australian stick filled with cactus needles.

Those second gen pickups always rusted there... many times it was the only thing wrong with the entire truck.

Unfortunately I think it is more expensive than salt. Hard to convince local government to make the change.

And our snow here in Southern California isn’t as harsh as it is in Michigan, not sure how well this would work in your area.
